Power
to
push

for Nurses

where maternity nursing & pelvic floor physio shape second stage care

Designed to strengthen clinical knowledge, protect pelvic floor function, and support physiologic birth

Power to Push is a physiology-forward, nurse-centered workshop focused on what happens at the bedside during the second stage of labour -  not just what the evidence says, but how nurses apply it in real time to support fetal descent, protect the pelvic floor, and respect each patient's goals.

This interactive, hands-on workshop uses real clinical scenarios, group discussion, and practical positioning exercises to translate evidence directly into everyday nursing care. At its core, Power to Push is about supporting effective pushing - not harder pushing - and gives nurses practical tools, clinical judgment, and shared language they can use on their very next shift.

This workshop is ideal for nurses who want to:

  • Feel more confident supporting a physiologic second stage

  • Use positioning as a clinical tool, not just a comfort measure

  • Support effective pushing while reducing perineal and pelvic floor injury

  • Use maternal movement and positioning to help babies rotate and descend

  • Navigate labouring down, slow progress and second stage decision-making

  • Balance evidence, patient preferences, and the realities of the unit

Topics Covered:

  • What's really happening in second stage: hormones, fetal positioning, maternal effort, pelvic floor anatomy

  • SOGC-aligned professional guidance

  • Spontaneous vs. directed (closed-glottis) pushing

  • Protecting the perineum and pelvic floor

  • Using positioning and movement to support fetal rotation and treat malposition (epidural and non-medicated labours)

  • Arrest of descent or normal pause?

  • Fetal heart rate interpretation during pushing

  • Labouring down: when it helps and when it harms

  • Risks of pushing too early

  • Supporting patient goals, preferences, and satisfaction

  • Teaching and coaching strategies for effective pushing

  • Recognizing personal and unit-level biases and navigating resistance to practice change

  • Bonus Goodies
